Our Mission
My journey as an instructor started in the U.S. Army many years ago where the standard practice was to “see one, do one, say one”. In other words, demonstrating and explaining the purpose and expected outcome and then sharing that with others was how we learned and learned to teach. That passion for seeing a student’s “light go on” became one of my most cherished experiences. I have through the years been a Porsche Club High Performance Driving Instructor for about 8 years, As an NREMT EMT-B and a Texas EMT-B, I’ve taught medical patient assessment to Search and Rescue teams and various Scouting groups.
I began competitive shooting in 1994 with a number of International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) competitors in central Texas and currently am a B-Class shooter that, honestly, only gets to a competition once or twice a year due to a very busy work and family schedule. As others around me asked about taking them to the range, I wanted to not only informally take them to the range to share my passion for safely shooting but I wanted to have credibility and credentials - so I became an instructor and started more formally training people - mostly word of mouth, friend of a friend sort of thing.
Our philosophy is simple. It is a crazy world out there and many of us won’t ever be in a defensive encounter where a firearm is necessary. But.. if one does find themselves in such an encounter, the availability of and skills to use a defensive firearm effectively is the most important skill you could ever have for you and your family. The reason we chose “Practical Carry” as our name is that we are not trying to turn our students into a Space Shuttle Door Gunner Ninja. We are teaching defensive firearms use for professionals. People that have much to risk if defense is done incorrectly or without a solid understanding of the rules regarding lethal force. So professionals teaching professionals to protect themselves and their families. Come join us.
I invest in ongoing training because there is always more to know, different angles to consider and new skills to master so that we can share those with our clients.
